Laos is the only country in the Southeast Asia which does not have any coastline. Nevertheless, its Si Phan Don with 4,000 islands featuring a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere with beautiful natural surroundings is considered an ideal place to relax and unwind. This region of the 4,000 islands lies in the waters of the Mekong River dotted with lovely settlements where the residents live in peace with the seasonal rise and fall of the water level.
Si Phan Don has three principal inhabited islands including Don Khong, Don Det and Don Khone, each with its own distinct culture and character. Don Det and Don Khon are the main tourist islands, and they are connected by an old stone bridge built in the French period. Don Khong is the largest, northern-most of the 4,000 islands, and the capital of Khong District and as such, the logical base for trips to the rest of the islands.
The best-known natural landmark in Si Phan Don is the Khone Phapheng waterfalls, the ‘Niagara of Southeast Asia’, said to be the widest in the region. As a merger of the Pha Pheng Falls and the Khone Falls, millions of liters of water descend over a set of cascades making the Khone Phapheng one of the most spectacular sites in Southern Laos. Take a boat trip up close to the falls to witness its massive size and the stunning power of nature. Stop at an observation deck along the riverside featuring a bunch of facilities like swings, tables and benches to enjoy a good angle view over the Khone Phapheng waterfalls.
Cycling trips are very popular in Si Phan Don due to mainly flat terrain and the short time it takes to get from place to place. Don Det and Don Khon is connected by a historic railway bridge, which was once used by the old French railway, the first to be built in Laos. It was intended to carry goods and even entire boats past the waterfalls in the area as part of a trade route to China. The railway ceased operation after the World War II, but you can still cycle along the track bed to see the remains of old fashioned locomotives which have been out of commission for years.
