Highlights of Cambodia Family Tours

Cambodia is very popular with families since it offers everything for an exotic, out-of-the-box family adventure. From the most famous temples of Angkor Wat to the hidden markets and floating fishing villages that lie deep in the countryside, one thing is certain: neither adults nor kids will ever be bored.

Starting a family trip in Siem Reap, where the breathtaking Angkorian temples dotted through the jungle in various stages of decay and restoration can be discovered physically, children can clamber over ruins, climb up precipitous staircases to get amazing views, and follow the story of the great battles of the past from the many rock carvings. Massive tree roots and encroaching jungles will inspire a fantasy of adventure and exploration in Indiana Jones' style. Outside Siem Reap is the wide expanse of Tonle Sap Lake, where families can cruise the canals and watch the daily life unfold in the villages with colorful houses on poles. At high water, paddle through the flooded forest, looking out for snakes, turtles, and otters; stop at farms for picnic lunches; and pay a visit to a local pagoda covered in colorful murals on the land.

On a longer vacation in Cambodia, venture to Battambang, a humble town located in the southwest, 160km from Siem Reap. It is a sleepy riverside place with attractive, if somewhat crumbling, colonial architecture. Embark on a cycling trip to the countryside in the suburbs through immense green rice fields, lovely small villages, and peaceful pagodas to visit local traditional craft villages such as winemaking, weaving, etc. Take a ride on the local bamboo train, which is made up of a bamboo platform that is covered with a mat for “comfort” and set on two sets of bogies with a motor at the back. It is exhilarating and extremely fun.

Head to Cambodia's south coast to the attractive twin towns of Kep and Kampot. At Kep, you can spend a wonderful couple of days taking a boat ride to Rabbit Island to go snorkeling, visiting a butterfly farm, taking hikes in the national park, and exploring the crab market. The market is great fun for kids because they can watch as the fishermen bring in the day’s catch before tucking into a large plate of freshly cooked seafood. Visit a pepper farm in Kampot to discover how the famous Kampot pepper, local spices, fruits, and plants are grown and processed. Taste a full range of Kampot pepper and spices organically grown at the farm to understand why this kind of pepper has been elected the best one in the world by chefs and gourmets.

As home to a long coastline, numerous beautiful beaches, and idyllic islands, a few days relaxing by the beach at the end will be a good way to end a long vacation. Travel to Sihanoukville, a popular beach town in Cambodia, for a laidback time and water activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Enjoy Sihanoukville's vibrant nightlife scene, with numerous beachfront bars and clubs. Additionally, the city is a jumping-off point to nearby breathtaking islands, including Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, which are easily accessible by boat. Embark on an island-hopping adventure and discover the hidden gems that await you offshore.
