Highlights of Laos Nature & Wildlife Tours

Having one of the most pristine natural landscapes in Southeast Asia, Laos is a country with a northern mountainous region, a central plateau, and a southern wetlands region. While the country may lack a tropical coastline, it makes up for it with scenic mountainous landscapes, flourishing rice paddies, and the stunning Mekong River that flows through its land. Caves and waterfalls are numerous and there are more hikes to cool viewpoints than one could make in one trip. Located in the heart of Indochina, Laos somehow remains untouched by commercial development.

Always in the top list of a visit to Laos, Kuangsi Waterfall is the largest one in Luang Prabang flowing through a limestone jungle and falling into three tiers, which looks like three-step on the way heading to the top of the mountain. Enjoy amazing views of the majestic cascades from the bridge that crosses the pool at the base of the main falls before cooling off with a swim in the fresh water surrounded by lush jungle. Aside from the cascades and pools, there are walking trails up to the waterfall's top rewarded with stunning views over the jungle. At the top, take a peaceful walk through a wooded area to some other beautiful swimming pools where a swing above the water can be enjoyed.
Head south from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng, which is known for its stunning natural landscapes of limestone mountains, lush greenery and the Nam Song River. Explore the impressive stalactites of the Tham Nam and Tham Phu Kham caves, kayak down the river past mountains and riverside villages to learn about the natives' day-to-day life, take a refreshing swim in the turquoise blue water at the Blue Lagoon, or for something more adventurous, hike up to the Nam Xay Viewpoint and enjoy panoramic views at the top. Apart from the beautiful scenery, you will fall in love with the laid-back atmosphere of this small town.

Down in sleepy southern Laos lies the city of Pakse, the gateway to the Bolaven Plateau. Marvel at the coffee and tea plantations and incredible waterfalls such as Tad Yuang, Tad Pha Suam and Tad Fane - the most famous one. Located in the Dong Hua Sao National Park, Tad Fane is absolutely spectacular with twin streams that plunge out of dense forest and tumble down from the height of more than 120m to form the Huay Bang Lieng River below. Trek the jungle-clad Phou Asa Mountain near Ban Khiet Ngong village to the shrine on the top and spend the day uncovering the secrets of its enigmatic ruins comprised of 108 stacked stone pillars. En-route, spot the signs of endangered wildlife and indigenous medicinal plants.

Home to more than 20 national parks scattered across the country, most of Laos is still covered by natural, primary and secondary forest creating habitat for a variety of wildlife. Among all the national protected areas, Nam Ha in Luang Namtha Province is an area of significant importance throughout Laos due to its high biodiversity and abundance of isolated ethnic-minority villages. It is home to a wide range of endangered mammals as well as a myriad of smaller wildlife and plant species. It is a guarantee that anyone who ventures along the forest trails will surely be in awe of its stunning natural beauty. Despite the area being famous for ecotourism, Nam Ha is still relatively off the tourist radar that makes it the place to go to escape the crowds and truly immerse yourself into the local way of life and the jungle wilderness.
