Highlights of Myanmar Heritage & Culture Tours

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is truly an extraordinary country whose people, landscapes, and culture are all unique. Uninfluenced by Western factors, this land is still wrapped in mystery, where traditional clothing is still worn, people still travel by horse cart, and Buddhism deeply influences architecture and actions. As the largest city in the country, Yangon boasts the largest number of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia and has a unique colonial-era urban core that is remarkably intact. The colonial-era buildings are centered around Sule Pagoda, the ancient shrine reputed to be over 2,000 years old, located at the very heart of downtown Yangon. Well known as Myanmar’s premier tourist attraction, Bagan has more than 2,000 temples, pagodas, and stupas that span the vast plains east of the Irrawaddy River. Take a bicycle or horse-cart to visit some stunning temples, such as Ananda, decorated on the outside with demon heads and green-and-yellow ceramic tiles; Shwesandaw, the tallest pagoda in Bagan; Htilominlo, with a sharp iconic spire at the top; and Sulamani, a harmonious blend of Indian and Mon architectural styles. Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, Mandalay is the economic center of Upper Myanmar and considered the center of Burmese culture, featuring numerous monasteries and more than 700 pagodas. The core of the city comprises Mandalay Palace, Mahamuni Buddha Temple, and Kuthodaw Pagoda, which contains the world's largest book. Gently nestled amid the hills of the Shan Plateau, Inle Lake, home of the Intha people, who own the unusual leg-rowing technique immortalized in countless fantastic photos, is the perfect place to get a glimpse into a distinctive slice of Burmese village life.
